I’ve been asked to read two short selections at this year’s August Sonata, an evening for writers and readers, organized by Douglas Arthur Brown. I’ll be reading from “Mud Pies” which was recently published in Unearthed, Volume 3 of the Speculative Elements Series. It’s a fun fantasy about a young woman who is overworked in her family’s magical healing business. The other story I’ll read from is called “Some Slight Stains.” It is an as-yet unpublished mainstream short story about a girl whose mother mysteriously disappears. Her only clue is a missing tablecloth that they called “Tuesday.”

He writes and sings songs, (three albums) writes and recites poetry, tells stories (short, tall and medium), writes stories and books. His first book, The Rock in the Water was shortlisted for the 2010 Leacock Medal for Humour. He lives in Tarbot, cuts his own firewood, and plays darts. Readers Ken Chisholm Ken Chisholm is a songwriter, playwright, and columnist living in Sydney. He has contributed stories to Airborne and Unearthed, the second and third speculative fiction anthologies from Third Person Press. Anyone attempting conversation with Mr. Chisholm is warned he has a new cat. Julie Curwin Julie Curwin is a psychiatrist who divides her time between Sydney and Boularderie. Her fiction has appeared in numerous literary journals and anthologies, including The Men’s Breakfast from Breton Books. Her short story “World Backwards” was the winner of the Commonwealth Short Story Competition in 2008-09. Russell Colman Russell Colman was born and raised in the Chicago area and worked for 22 years as a logistics officer in the US Marine Corps. In 2011, his short story What Angel Wakes Me appeared in The Men’s Breakfast published by Breton Books. He’s completed a full-length mystery and is working on a second, set in Cape Breton. He is a member of the Boularderie Island Writers’ Institute, the Writers Federation of Nova Scotia, and the Crime Writers of Canada. Russell and his partner William live in Whitney Pier with their two housecats, Rudy and Cupid, and a big black poodle named Beau. Sandra Dunn Sandra Dunn enjoys all genres of writing, but has always favoured poetry. Her latest published work “Safe Waters” is found in the anthology The Bright Well, Contemporary Canadian Poems about Facing Cancer. She has a Theatre Arts Certificate from Cape Breton University. She has written, directed and stage-managed plays there. She facilitates a writer’s group Whitney Writers Ink, that launched their 1st Anthology From the Pier and Beyond a year ago, and are planning another for late spring. Colleen Gillis Colleen Gillis has taught English at Cape Breton University and worked as a freelance editor. Two of her stories will appear in the fall issues of the Windsor Review and Room Magazine. She has previously been published in the Fiddlehead, the Halifax Herald, and Eastern Horizons: New Writing from Cape Breton. Nancy Waldman Nancy Waldman writes science fiction, fantasy and mainstream fiction. Her short story, “Her Top Forty” was published in The Men’s Breakfast from Breton Books last year. She is one of the three founders of Third Person Press, which specializes in regional speculative fiction and, since 2008, has published four anthologies of short fiction by Cape Breton authors. She lives in a big, brightly painted house in the woods near North Sydney with her husband Barry. Sherry Ramsey Sherry D. Ramsey writes science fiction and fantasy for both adults and young adults, and is a web publisher, jewellery-maker, and one of the founding editors of Third Person Press. Her short story collection, “To Unimagined Shores,” was released last December, and her latest publication is her story “The Cache,” in Third Person Press’s newest anthology, Unearthed. She is a member of the Writer’s Federation of Nova Scotia’s Board of Directors, and currently the Secretary-Treasurer of Science Fiction Canada. Book Exchange One of the highlights of the evening is the annual book exchange. The audience is encouraged to bring four books to exchange for other titles provided by other audience members.
